Back Ache in Ayurveda

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

In Greek mythology, the giant Atlas carrys the weight of the earth on his head. Like Atlas, the spinal column holds most of the weight of the body. Normally sturdy, the back bone suddenly gives in to agonizing pain especially in the lower back. The pain disables a person, completely. The pain could be excruciating.
Structure of the spinal column
The spine consists of small bones called ?vertebrae?. These vertebrae are stacked one above the other forming the spinal column. There are 7 cervical, 12 dorsal, 5 lumbar,
5 sacral, 4 caudal or coccygeal forming a coccyx. The coccyxs is a small triangular bone forming the lower extremity of the spinal column, consisting of four ankylosed rudimentary vertebrae. Between each vertebra there is a washer like ?disc? acting as a cushion. This inter vertebral disk is the plate of fibro ? cartilage between the bodies of adjacent vertebrae. Each disk has a soft gelatinous core (through which the spinal cord passes) and a tough fibrous outer shell. The vertebrae are held together by ligaments, and muscles are attached to the vertebrae by tendons. The cores (openings) in the vertebrae neatly form a long hollow spinal canal to let the spinal cord rum from the base of the brain. The spinal cord, collection of grey and white matter, sensory neurons, Ganglions, spinal nerve etc, connects the brain to the rest of the body allowing us to control our movements. Nerves from the spinal cord branch out and leave the spine through the spaces in between the vertebrae. The spine it self has 3 segments:- the cervical spine, the thoracic spine and the lumbar spine, these three denoting upper part, middle and lower part of the spine, respectively.
Most of the body weight is held by the lower part of the back. Therefore any problem with the bone, muscle or ligament in this area can cause pain. Displacement of an inter vertebral disc from its position between 2 vertebrae is called ?Prolapsed disc?. This prolapsed disc brings pressure on the sciatic nerve and causes pain in the buttocks and legs, called ?Sciatica?.
